The healing power of kids
One of my little ones has been poorly with appendicitis, which resulted in her having an operation to remove the offending appendage. (This being the reason I haven't posted here for a short while).
As it was an emergency situation we of course weren't prepared. Are you ever prepared for emergency situations?
With other kids to be cared for my darling younger sibling stepped in to the breach. She dragged herself and her own child to our house where they remained for the next four days and three nights so that I could entrench myself in the hospital bed next to my poorly one, without having to worry (too much) about the others.
Our local hospital, The Countess of Chester, has recently opened a special adolescent ward, for those individuals who are too old to be on the kids ward and too young to be on the adult wards. It was officially opened by Michael Owen. (article)
My daughter, being the only adolescent in the hospital for surgery, had sole use (except for me of course) of the three bed girls ward, the large private shower room and the TV, computer and games room. The Unit is very well kitted out, clean and a grateful addition to the local facilities which is geared to care for teenagers suffering from a number of illnesses.
The nursing staff were all excellent with two in particular standing out from the rest. These two, one on days, one on nights, were, well, how to say it without offending any of the others should they happen across these writings! They had that little something extra, that dedicated approach to their care giving, that 'bedside manner' that made such a difference, not to me, but to my daughter. They were not only 'nurses' they were carers. They cared about even the smallest thing that would help their patient. To those two - a special thank you for being special caring nurses.
With their care and attention to detail, as well as the healing power of youth, my daughter was soon virtually jumping out of her hospital bed. She did actually make a very quick post operative recovery and I was able to bring her home, where she has continued to rest and recover steadily.
The main inconvenience for my daughter was that she was poorly in her school holidays! She had wanted to go back today with the other kids, however, she is taking a couple of extra days to rest and will 'try it out' on Wednesday as it's a short school day.
Thankfully the emergency operation dealt with the problem before it became a very major problem for my daughter, she is getting better and stronger and finally, perhaps I can get some sleep!!
Being a mum with a sick child, sleep is really never the same when you have one eye and one ear open - it reminded me of those sleepless nights mums have when they have newborns!
Now I'm happy that my child is on the mend i can indulge in some healing power of real sleep. Night all :>)
